A vivid young star cluster surrounded by sculpted gas and dust near the edge of the Small Magellanic Cloud.

This proposal is based on Webb's multi-instrument image of NGC 602, a star-forming region in a low-metallicity environment that echoes conditions in the early universe.

NGC 602 offers the kind of image that works beautifully both as science and as interior art. Bright stars, dark ridges, and translucent layers of dust create a deep, dimensional composition that feels expansive and full of motion.

ESA's official release notes that this young cluster lies near the outskirts of the Small Magellanic Cloud, roughly 200,000 light-years away. Its environment has relatively low abundances of heavier elements, making it an important laboratory for understanding star formation under conditions different from those in our local galactic neighbourhood.
