A face-on spiral galaxy revealed by Webb as a radiant swirl of orange dust lanes and a cool blue central glow.
This proposal is based on Webb's view of NGC 628, also known as Messier 74, one of the best nearby examples of a face-on spiral galaxy.
Phantom Galaxy captures the hypnotic structure of NGC 628 in a format made for the wall. Webb shows this nearby spiral not as a soft smear of starlight, but as a dense, living system of filamentary arms, dust, and stellar structure.
NASA's official release emphasizes the contrast between Hubble's visible-light view and Webb's infrared look, where dust glows instead of obscuring the scene. The Webb image is especially compelling on its own: a blue-hazed core surrounded by orange, shell-like spiral arms that feel both mathematical and organic.
