This image comes as a result of a particular adventure carried out in the Cottian Alps west of the Alpine arc in Italy, in the country where I live.

After a very long walk that lasted all day, having crossed the most demanding pass of the trek, I descended towards this alpine lake on the border with France.

In the early afternoon the weather was really nice but Big clouds were threatening to arrive, so within a few hours the weather turned dark and it started to rain heavily. Taking refuge in my tent to shelter from water, lightning and hail, I had a quiet dinner and went to bed, with no more hope of being able to photograph the spectacular starry sky I had in mind. well into the night I was lucky enough to wake up no longer lulled by the noise of the storm. I put my nose out of the tent, looked up and saw the sky completely clear. The storm had passed and the sky was filled with a myriad of tiny pinpoints of light. Taken by excitement, driven by a charge of adrenaline, I took out my tripod and camera, went down to the lake and began to shoot under that magnificent sky.

This is one of the shots I took home from that adventure.

The Big Dipper reflected on the calm and placid lake water and a really intense air glow that was also reflected in the lake.

The colors of green, orange and purple in the sky are in fact not due to an overly creative post-production, those colors are the result of the phenomenon we call air glow, this phenomenon is a natural luminescence of the atmosphere that is only visible in really dark areas, like in this case, the heart of the Alps.
