A nighttime Earth glows through Orion’s window, lit by moonlight and edged by green auroras above the darkness of space.
This image was taken on April 2, 2026 through a window of the Orion spacecraft after the critical translunar injection burn. The visible hemisphere of Earth appears bright, but NASA notes that it is actually illuminated by moonlight reflected from the lunar surface. Green auroras glow along the southern and northern edges of the planet.
Earth by Artemis II offers one of the most intimate Earth portraits of the mission. Photographed through Orion’s window after translunar injection, it shows our planet suspended in darkness with remarkable softness, colour, and atmosphere.
What makes this image especially compelling is its light. Although Earth appears sunlit at first glance, NASA explains that the visible hemisphere is illuminated by moonlight reflected from the lunar surface. Along the edges of the disk, green auroras glow where charged particles from the Sun interact with gases in Earth’s atmosphere. The result is both scientifically fascinating and visually unforgettable.
