A luminous crescent Earth slips behind the lunar horizon in one of the most poetic views captured during Artemis II.

This image shows Earth setting behind the cratered surface of the Moon as seen by the Artemis II crew on April 6, 2026. The foreground reveals rugged lunar terrain, including the area around Ohm crater, while the partially illuminated Earth shows bright clouds and blue water over the Australia and Oceania region.

Earthset captures one of the most iconic moments of the Artemis II mission: a crescent Earth sinking behind the lunar horizon as Orion flew around the Moon’s far side. The view is intimate and monumental at once, balancing the harsh texture of the Moon with the soft blue glow of our home planet.

Seen in the foreground is cratered lunar terrain photographed during the crew’s farside flyby. NASA notes that the scene includes the area around Ohm crater, while the sunlit side of Earth reveals cloud systems over Australia and Oceania and the dark side slips into night. The image naturally echoes the emotional legacy of Earthrise, but with a new perspective for a new generation of lunar exploration.
